Volcano Eruption Special: 11-16 Feb 2019: short-notice special tour to see the ongoing eruption of Karangetang volcano in northern Indonesia. Lava dome growth has been reported, as well as the effusion of several lava flows onto the dome flanks. Prior to its noted 1955-56 eruption, Bezymianny had been considered extinct. Activity during February to mid-March 2019 consisted of predominantly moderate gas-and-steam emissions. https://doi.org/10.5479/si.GVP.BGVN201912-300250. St. Helens eruption in 1980) which removed a 0.5 sq km sector of the volcano. Global Volcanism Program, 2019. Smithsonian Institution. Complete Bulletin. According to the KVERT Weekly Reports, satellite data showed large ash clouds from this eruption drifting several thousands of kilometers east from the volcano. In: Sennert, S K (ed. During 28-31 August and on 4, 8 and 10 September a thermal anomaly was detected in satellite images. One explosion occurred during this reporting period. Managing Editor: Sally Kuhn Sennert. Subsequent episodic but ongoing lava-dome growth, accompanied by intermittent explosive activity and pyroclastic flows, has largely filled the 1956 crater. Global Volcanism Program, 2019. Status Unrest Eruption 2019 2882m Stratovolcano (Subduction zone / Continental crust (> 25 km)) Prior to its noted 1955-56 eruption, Bezymianny had been considered extinct. Report on Bezymianny (Russia) (Venzke, E., ed.). An eruption of Bezymianny volcano happened in Kamchatka for the first time since 2017. The latest period, which was preceded by a 1000-year quiescence, began with the dramatic 1955-56 eruption. Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network, 44:12. Starting and ending in Manado. Volcano was marked with the "red" code of aviation hazard. Three periods of intensified activity have occurred during the past 3000 years. According to the MODVOLC algorithm, 11 hotspot pixels were recorded between February and May 2019.

The MIROVA (Middle InfraRed Observation of Volcanic Activity) volcano hotspot detection system, based on analysis of MODIS data, detected hotspots within 5 km of the summit almost every day. Incandescent, hot avalanches from the lava dome, strong fumarolic activity, and a thermal anomaly began to occur in mid-March 2019. Smithsonian Institution and US Geological Survey. Geologic Background. of Hawai'i, 2525 Correa Road, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA (URL: http://modis.higp.hawaii.edu/). Volcanic activity at Bezymianny has been frequent for the past 60 years, and almost continuous since May 2010. It is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka. According to KVERT weekly reports, lava dome growth continued in June through mid-July 2019. Volcano Profile |
Bezymianny volcano is located near Klyuchevskaya Sopka. New lava dome is growing in the summit crater of Bezymianny volcano (image: KVERT). The eruption followed a massive flank failure (similar to Mt. Ashfall was reported in Ust'-Kamchatsk (115 km E) on 15 March and Nikolskoe (350 km E) on 15-16 March 2019. Satellite imagery allows to detect an increasingly hot zone on the upper western slope of the lava dome inside the summit caldera of the volcano. KVERT also reported a thermal anomaly over the volcano almost daily, except when it was obscured by clouds. The activity at the volcano's lava dome inside its summit caldera has increased: the thermal signal has become stronger during the past week or so and is now clearly visible on satellite data. The Volcano Adventure Guide: Excellent information and background for anyone wishing to visit active volcanoes safely and enjoyably. New lava dome is growing in the summit crater of Bezymianny volcano (image: KVERT). Report on Bezymianny (Russia) (Venzke, E., ed.). It began approximate at 7 pm (Moscow time) on Sunday, January 20. This reporting period includes activity from February-May 2019. Our expert volcanologists and photographers offer unique travel experiences: Bezymianny ("unnamed") was considered extinct until it erupted violently in 1955-56, after a slumber of probably 1000 years. Global Volcanism Program, 2019. Bezymianny (Russia) Ongoing thermal anomalies, gas-and-steam plumes, and lava dome growth during February-May 2019; strong explosion in mid-March. Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network, vol. Please cite this report as:
This eruption, similar to that of St. Helens in 1980, produced a large horseshoe-shaped crater that was formed by collapse of the summit and an associated lateral blast. On 1 January KVERT reported that activity at Bezymianny had significantly declined during the previous week; the temperature of the thermal anomaly identified in satellite images decreased and nighttime lava-dome incandescence was no longer visible. Bezymianny Volcano Volcanic Ash Advisory: 20190315/1730Z ERUPTION to 50000 ft (15200 m) Saturday, Mar 16, 2019 Bezymianny Volcano Volcanic Ash Advisory: RESIDUAL VA FM 20190315/1730 ERUPTION. Incandescent lava dome growth with extruding, viscous lava flows accompanying strong fumarolic activity and thermal anomalies continued in late April-May 2019 (figure 30). Weekly Report (25 December-31 December 2019). The Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) issued by KVERT for this event described ash clouds to a distance of about 870 km.
