Trail overgrown and thin after Frisell summit. Hiking is top-notch year round, though winter access takes a little planning in advance. When doing this hike counterclockwise, which I highly recommend, note that you will end at the Brace Mt trailhead and have to walk about a mile on the dirt road back to the Mt Frissell trailhead. The high point of Connecticut is 740 feet south and 80 vertical feet below the summit of Mount Frissell, which lies in Massachusetts. Saw parachutists at summit of Brace which was cool! We thought about joining this hike with Brace Mountain Trail, starting from the south (Quarry Hill in NY) to avoid the extra 1/2 hour drive. If you do this route, complete with the detour to Brace and Alander, it’s about 12.6 miles total – a robust hike for an all day outing but none too hard for fit hikers.

You descend slightly to a col and then climb steeply up Mt. Mount frissell is located in the South Taconic Range. Mount Frissell, in all its humble glory, is a mere half mile farther to the northwest. The trail ascends steeply up round mountain where there are views to be had in every direction.

A giant concrete barrier blocks entry to the official trailhead (not to mention a great parking lot). It is the highest point in Connecticut, but the summit is in Massachusetts. My most recent foray to Mount Frissell began from the Connecticut side, which is just a whisker away from being in Massachusetts. I enjoyed it.
