I’m a pretty recent convert to cycling caps, previously assuming I would look like a twit in one (maybe I do, but no more than anyone else) but this year I discovered wearing one actually keeps my hair pretty neat, even in the peak of summer – my helmet alone crimps my hair and a healthy sweat sets it nicely, but no more!

This will render one a douche, and should result in public berating or beating. Ah, the glamourous sport of cycling! Swimmers wear caps to keep the hair out of the face while swimming, reduce drag and be more hydrodynamic. I wear one or the other most days, unless my wife catches me before I leave the house in the morning, in which case I wear a Bern helmet…. Unlike most helmets, it folds up into a pocket and does the most important task of any headgear: deflects overhanging branches.

The second way is to grab the cap by the outside. These caps are used for open water competitions in colder climates. I like wearing one under my helmet in the city as it stops the ridges in my hair if it is still wet when I leave the house. We have no rules …we wear them on and off the bike. Stick your hands inside the cap and stretch it as wide as it will go.
The caps are not made to keep the hair dry but to reduce drag. What is the statement to be made with a cap under a helmet? Always be as gentle as possible with your cap. The less hair catching water on the body the quicker the swimmer will move. U don’t have to worry that hair and best stream line in the water. I am doing a science project on drag in water. In open water, a cap makes swimmers more visible to other athletes and rescue crews. A lifelong cyclist – both road and motorized- I have never embraced wearing a helmet except on my Triumph Bonneville but cannot abide by the hardened/vented head wear on a pedal bike. However, I promise you will have a better experience if your hair is not swirling around your face and getting into your nose and mouth. Goggles are more likely to stay put during a race if they are given a seamless and sticky surface to adhere to. A kippah or skull cap is a lot like a wedding ring. Silicon caps are one of the most durable types of swim caps. I use one myself when out on the trails, and the short peak has the advantage of allowing a runner to see oncoming branches that would otherwise whack them in the forehead. The foam strips in the helmet are of little use for this function.
