The grounds surrounding the cottage afford fabulous views of the ocean and inland snow-capped mountains. It is cold, so make sure you do take extra food and warm clothes for this part of the walk. This walk starts at Mt Fyffe car park.

I’m a Christchurch born adventurer, studying engineering at the University of Canterbury. The track is wide and very easy to follow. Kaikoura is about halfway between Christchurch and my current home of Blenheim on the South Island of New Zealand. It can be done as a day walk or an overnight trek. Looks cheap until you get to pay. On take off we saw Dolphins in the waves.

From the Mt Fyffe car park, follow the most obvious trail that leads up the mountain. Yes, camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis at Mt Fyffe Hut. The Seaward Kaikouras and the Inland Kaikouras are twin mountain ranges that parallel the northeastern coast of the South Island. You will be rewarded with a downhill rush and breath-taking views over Kaikōura and mountain ranges. It is not a hike to be missed if you are in the Kaikoura region.

It’s like New Zealand’s little Nepal. The trudge up the mountain rewards with excellent views to the southeast of the Kaikoura plains and peninsula, and to the northwest of the Seaward Kaikouras and the deep void to the Kowhai River below. If you are staying at the hut and you have some time, pick up a few branches that are around in the pine forest and store it inside the hut. Summer-bare or plastered with winter’s snowy coat, Mount Fyffe and the Seaward Kaikōura Range dominate the Kaikoura skyline.
