In shape post Ragnarok Thor without StormBreaker already got wrecked by Thanos off camera, no reason to think Gungir is gonna change that. @goldybeauty: Thor really doesn’t utilise his powers to the fullest in the MCU, I just hate when heroes are jobbing during ultimate crisis situations especially during final fight deceiding fate of everything. In the movies I would say we have not seen a lot of his power but still he would be a lot more powerful than Thor so I think he could take him. Overall they have a better chance and I'd say the weapons are the highest factor, with the shield still on Cap. Thanos has a chance to win but Gungir is definitely a threat to him (as it pierced Hela). © 2020 CBS Interactive Inc. All rights reserved. Marvel Database is a FANDOM Movies Community. In a straight up fight where neither has a better weapon it’s probably pretty close. This, I believe it more than a theory as there was a quote about it (will try and hunt it down). Another story states it was among several objects forged by the Sons of Ivalid as part of a contest arranged by Loki. Stormbreaker was used in the Battle of Wakanda to great effect, augmenting Thor's own lightning massively. However, Thor intentionally aimed for Thanos' chest, resulting in Thanos only being badly injured rather than instantly killed. You could argue Thanos uru sword will absorb the energy of Odin’s blasts when spun, only because uru has been shown to do so, but the sword being Uru isn’t certain. At first the spear was stated to have no power on its own. In the comics Odin is a lot more powerful than Thanos without the stones. @rosalinagalaxy3: it’s probably due to budget limitations, they had a lot of power sets to display on screen. The spear unified the nine surviving gods to create a new Odin who claimed Gungnir as his own. Odin has used the spear as one of his weapons and a symbol of power throughout his reign. Take your favorite fandoms with you and never miss a beat. Entire this battle was poorly written. This is basically two pre IW Thors vs Thanos. So a Stormbreaker Thor can most definitely put down Hela. Being made from uru, it served as a natural channel for Odin's own power in the form of energy blasts and other effects. Thor was punching Hela but never touched Thanos without a long weapon. The Destroyer is one of the go-to plot ideas in the history of Thor. Thor Stormbreaker basically severely hurt a full IG Thanos (which at this point is the most powerful being in the MCU). Let alone Odin’s mystical abilities. @galatea_: Gungnir still has a long shaft for Thanos to grab. Didn't odin headbutt galactus damaging him and breaking his armor? Gungnir is also much faster to swing and has just as good of a range as Stormbreaker. Knowing that, for the most part, asgardians get stronger as they age I would be comfortable putting MCU odin above stormbreaker thor (though not by much and perhaps if thor stayed in shape and gained more experience he would have surpassed odin sooner than later) and EG thor (who I think is weaker than IW thor due to being out of shape/ practice). Gungnir is the spear of Odin. Cap is more skilled in combat but we saw the results of his exchange with the Mad Titan once before, no reason to assume it would go any better this time. Then throw Stormbreaker. Thanos wins. According to one story, dwarves forged it from sunlight as a gift to Odin. Don't see why it'll be any different now, except it'd be easier for Thanos. Gungnir never misses, Odin could never get close enough for Thanos to make a hit, just throw the spear until T's dead. I’m confident the blasts will kill him. Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spider-Man's First Appearance), Tales of Suspense #39 (Iron Man's First Appearance), Incredible Hulk #181 (Wolverine's First Appearance), https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Gungnir_(Spear)?oldid=5494217, Unlike Mjolnir, Gungnir doesn't have a magical safeguard, meaning anyone can wield it. Entire this battle was poorly written. Why couldn't Thor just use same tornado like in his first movie, restrain then slash with axe ? During the assault on Asgard, Gungnir was stolen by the Thunderbolts, ordered by Norman Osborn to bring it to him to turn the tide of his siege of Asgard. Just restrained in air and Thanos is screwed. Look at this 3:16 : Just lift Thanos easily, sword would be irrelevant. No idea what he meant then, but if that was powerwise greater then probably this was brain/mental wise dumber. Gungnir is also much faster to swing and has just as good of a range as Stormbreaker Overall they have a better chance and I'd say the weapons are the highest factor, with the shield still on Cap. In a straight up fight where neither has a better weapon it’s probably pretty close. Lord knows how experienced Odin is. He is certainly more powerful. If thrown it would fly after its target and its tip would be surrounded with electricity. It would obey Odin's command to mentally return to him and could only be wielded by Odin. We do see Thor when he gains the Odinforce can go toe to toe with celestial level threats, so we can assume the Odinforce is probably by itself enough to handle Thanos. I doubt he has as much physical strength as Thanos, but seeing Thor survive a star blast, one might deduce his father might be of a similar toughness, and we know Thanos has some thick skin as it took almost almost all of Tony Stark's arsenal and effort to draw blood.
