We had a great time and would for sure go back to the site. The Ptarmigan Lake trailhead is located about 2.75 miles west of Collegiate Peaks campground. The Middle Fork of Cottonwood Creek flows along the south side of the campground. My 15 y/o son and I really enjoyed our 2-night stay here in Aug 2015. Look, I don't expect luxury at a campground but for $20 a night I want water and reliable toilet paper. Conveniently located restaurants include Simple Eatery, Buena Vista Roastery, and House Rock Kitchen. The water sites (only one working) were dirty and the water quality low. Campsites are fairly large with plenty of space between sites. The campground offers well-spaced campsites and scenic views of the surrounding mountains. $22.00 fee per site for overnight camping. Collegiate Peaks Campground is a great camping choice west of Buena Vista in central Colorado. Collegiate Peaks campground is heavily wooded with 56 single-family campsites with the Middle Fork of Cottonwood Creek flowing along the south side. Visitors enjoy fishing and exploring local trails. The Ptarmigan Lake trailhead is located about 2.75 miles west of Collegiate Peaks campground. Denny Creek is located 1 mile west of the campground and accesses the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness area. After the first day we could not stomach the taste and just filtered water from the river. Nearby attractions include CKS Main Street (0.2 miles), Vicksburg (0.2 miles), and Comanche Drive In Theatre (0.2 miles). Yeah, right. Yes, it is 0.1 miles away from the center of Buena Vista. There are more places to choose from in the Buena Vista area.
