Started this hike today at 6:40 am and we only saw one other group of three at the time. Other than the map leading you to no where it was a great adventure. This is one of my favorite hikes in the Escalante area. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from March until October. On our walk back we saw 2 other groups starting the trail around 8 am so overall quite empty this morning.
Hike to Bomber Mountain. The best part of this hike is the Big Horn Mine. Ya nasties leaving beer cans and spray paint cans everywhere. Rate this Adventure 22.8 miles 3000 ft gain - Out-and-Back Trail Save Add Review Get Directions Add Photo. Easy to moderate with a few narrow spots. Most of the trail is on a dirt fire road either lined with trees or wonderful views. Make sure you go behind the structure to check out the mine. There are many hiking trails throughout the Big Horn Mountains and Bighorn National Forest, providing the hiker/backpacker with scenic views of mountain vistas, lakes, and wildlife. You can walk up one side, cross the creek above the falls and come down the other side. Beautiful scenery through the entire trail.
stop tagging the woods with ignorant stuff or at all for that matter. View from cliff is beautiful. They are nice but only if you are in the area. Exploring the mine... yesssss. Would definitely recommend! While people climb all over the mine, be aware that it’s over a hundred years old. The majority of the hike you could do blindfolded...the path is wide, secure, level, has shade to rest in...but those two spots could take your breath away if you’re not used to catwalks along drop-offs. Ya Ha Tinda is a real playground for the senses. The Bighorn Canyon loop is described in Steve Allen's Canyoneering 3 guide to Escalante. Lower Bighorn Falls Loop is a 5 mile out and back trail located near Sundre, Alberta, Canada that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. Awesome hike, took 2 hours round trip including taking some time to stop at the mine.
Views were worth the minimal effort needed for this hike. There are also 1,200 feet of mine shafts that are not meant for you to be in. Little crowded. Great, leisurely hike with some inclines peppered along the way to give you a good sweat. The trail is mostly still a passable fire road, but gets a little more rocky as the hike continues. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/big-horn-mine-trail Don’t follow the map that someone recorded as it just takes you for a walk through the fields and bushes. Like the comments say, don't follow this mapped out trail. Please remember: Wear appropriate footwear. Very nice, chill trail with some narrow areas. This trail is no where near Nordegg but just outside Sundre at the Ya Ha Tinda. If you want to see the entrance of the mine, you will need to climb up the broken wood.
